Emily Elbert - Here And Now - 10/23/2017 - Paste Studios, New York, NY

Emily Elbert - What's Going On (Marvin Gaye cover live at Studio Delux)

Bio
Emily Elbert weaves together a soul-folk blend of introspection, celebration, and progressive perspective. With a global, D.I.Y. spirit, she has carried her music around the world, playing over a thousand independent shows from Peru to Palestine. Anchored by what L.A. Weekly calls a "smartly funky groove" with "sly words in artful arrangements,” the publication notes, "Elbert would be considered remarkable just for her guitar playing, which segues from hard-edged funk and blues to more gently subtle jazz intricacy. But she’s an equally adept vocalist, weaving her soulful phrasing nimbly within the rhythms of her guitar chords.” Emily has independently released four albums, and several singles, including 2017's protest-rocker "True Power."

In addition to her work as a solo artist, Emily has contributed her voice and guitar to projects ranging from local California bands to Grammy-winning international acts.  Recently, she spent a year touring as a member of Esperanza Spalding’s experimental music and theater project, “Emily’s D+Evolution.”  The group recorded an album to wide critical acclaim, and played shows ranging from the Late Show with Stephen Colbert to the Sydney Opera House.  She also lent her vocals to Dweezil Zappa’s latest record, "Via Zammata," co-wrote Bruno Major's viral hit "Easily," and has been a guest member in the band of Phish’s Mike Gordon.

Solo, Emily has used her music as a platform to raise funds and awareness for humanitarian and environmental efforts, attracted more than 2 million YouTube views, and opened for artists like G. Love & Special Sauce, Emily King, Leon Russell, Victor Wooten, Moonchild, and Richie Havens. Her work has garnered praise from publications like the Washington Post, Utne Reader, and Glamour Magazine, and won awards in the U.S. and U.K.. Her fifth album, "We Who Believe in Freedom," will be released in fall 2018. Through authentic song sharing, she strives for a deepening sense of human and spiritual connection that is accessible to all.

L.A. WEEKLY WRITE-UP

April 19, 2018

Thanks to Falling James Moreland at L.A. Weekly for the great piece promoting this week's Hotel Cafe show:

"Emily Elbert would be considered remarkable just for her guitar playing, which segues from hard-edged funk and blues to more gently subtle jazz intricacy. But she’s an equally adept vocalist, weaving her soulful phrasing nimbly within the rhythms and “the silence in the space between the notes” of her guitar chords. The local singer tries to reconcile the opposing worlds of creationism and evolution in three succinct lines from the title track of her Evolve EP: 'There’s a force that brings us together/It’s the same one that created us all/And now the point is to evolve.' "

"Nightbird"-  Miss Brown To You

"The Lonesome Blues"- Miss Brown To You

Miss Brown To You
Mary Reynolds & Louise Goldberg

A folk ballad from the misty hills of Kentucky.
A sophisticated jazz standard, heard through a New York doorway.
Steamy blues from New Orleans, circa 1920.
A swinging two step at the dance hall, where Bob Wills is on the stand.
A samba igniting the hills of Rio de Janeiro.
Colorful original songs.

These musicians perform with passion and humor and total commitment to the emotional power of the music they love. Miss Brown to You refuses to be confined to one style, one period. Instead they prefer to expand the horizon of every genre they play, even while upholding the traditions of the musicians that have inspired them in the past. The musicians that make up Miss Brown to You are capable of an eclectic abandon that few other bands attempt, and they are looking for an audience that appreciates a broad palate of musical colors.

Louise’s quotes:

“Louise Goldberg is a superb pianist, whose deft and subtle playing is the perfect accompanist…”
Scott Aycock, KWGS Folk Salad

“…not only an astonishingly accomplished musician, multi-instrumentalist, and performer, she is a gifted composer and song writer as well.”
John Hadley, Tree International

“…terrific pianist…”
Larry Laneer, The Oklahoman

Mary’s Quotes:

“Her voice is a clarion call, a beautiful & controlled birdsong.”
Thomas Conner, Tulsa World

“…one of Oklahoma City’s truly groovy talents.”
DeDe LeDeux, Oklahoma Gazette

Miss Brown To You’s quotes:

“I’ve printed it before, I’ll print it again: Mary Reynolds has the most beautiful voice in the world. A fixture on many stages, her pipes ring like the bells of heaven… stopping the main-stage show Thursday night as part of the all-star band singing ‘I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You’…”
Thomas Conner, Tulsa World

“It’s no secret that where Mary Reynolds & Louise Goldberg come from, jazz, blues and folk music have always shared equal space. Those influences are front and center on songs that allow Goldberg’s piano and Reynolds’ voice to shine. Reynolds & Goldberg…connect so effortlessly that you feel like you are are hearing a singular voice. …this recording is a tour de force of interpretative genius.”
Greg Johnson, KOSU For The Sake Of The Song

“I can’t think of anyone who interprets other great songwriter’s songs better than Mary Reynolds and Louise Goldberg. They can take a song that has been covered by the best and pull the strongest elements from all of them, and then inhabit the song in such a way that it transcends all the others. They are that good!”
Scott Aycock, KWGS Folk Salad

GRANT PEEPLES BIO:

A self-described  “tree-hugger that watches NASCAR, and Buddhist with a gun below the seat,”  Grant Peeples is known for his axe-sharp socio-political tunes, raucous humor and heart-gigging ballads.
In 2014 he was the recipient of the Focus Foundation Award for Creative Excellence, which cited the “humor, compassion and wisdom of his songs,” as well as their "unflinching social insight and cultural acuity.” He is a regular performer at The Woody Guthrie Folk Festival, Okemah OK. The 30A Songwriters Festival, and The Florida, Will McLean, & Gamble Rogers Folk Festivals.
Grant spent over a decade living on a small island off the Miskito Coast of Nicaragua. During his US absence (1995-2006), while our country was surging ahead into lifestyle changes bordering on futuristic, Grant was installing the island’s first flushing toilet, digging his own well, and rescuing sea turtles on Little Corn Island. He returned in 2006 to a homeland going through economic, social, and political upheaval. Much of his writing is in response to what he found on his return.

Grant has made eight studio records. They include a trilogy produced by Gurf Morlix, and his latest, also produced by Morlix, Settling Scores Vol. II., released earlier this year.

Chris Lee Becker is a singer/songwriter living right here in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Chris Lee Becker is a true folk singer with a perspective on the world that looks beyond the surface and sees and hears what many miss, and that is the disenfranchised, the misfits, the ones who don't aspire to "Make America Great Again", because they are too busy just trying to put one foot in front of another.  His characters, though, do get up and with grace and courage rise and face the day, and often we, the listener, are left better for having known them.  Scott Aycock, Folk Salad Radio and House Concerts Unlimited

Kim Richey - Angels' Share (acoustic)

Kim's bio:

“[Kim Richey] would rule the charts in a land where Marshall Crenshaw was king, Aimee Mann queen, and the The Beatles never put out another record after Revolver.” Steve Horowitz, popmatters.com

“Richey entices you with sad and unembellished music that reveals an original spirit - and then she ensnares you for keeps by making you consider all the noiseless sensations that no songs can ever contain.” Timothy White, Billboard Magazine

Those artists who find themselves stuck in the deepest of ruts two decades into their careers could learn a thing or two from veteran singer-songwriter Kim Richey. She’s never been afraid to go where the inspiration is.

Two-time Grammy-nominated Kim is a storyteller; a weaver of emotions and a tugger of heartstrings. Tender, poetic and aching with life’s truths, Kim’s songs transport you to her world, where words paint pictures and melodies touch the soul. And then there’s her voice. Pure, arresting and honest, it makes you take notice; Kim has the kind of voice where if emotions were ribbons, they’d be streaming in rainbow colours from your iPod.

Early on, the Zanesville, Ohio native thrived on the progressive side of mainstream country, her albums (1995’s Kim Richey, 1997’s Bittersweet and 1999’s Glimmer, all on Mercury) showcasing twang-pop sensibilities, a rich, rounded vocal tone and effortlessly sophisticated songwriting that other discerning performers - Radney Foster, Trisha Yearwood and Pam Tillis to name a few - coveted for their own recordings.

In the years since, Kim has made her subtly psychedelic album Rise (Lost Highway) in Los Angeles with producer Bill Bottrell, flown to London to enlist the help of Giles Martin and emerging with the crisply orchestrated Chinese Boxes (Vanguard) and turned to her East Nashville-based bandleader and frequent co-writer Neilson Hubbard to conjure the earthy indie-pop feel of Wreck Your Wheels (Lojinx/Thirty Tigers) and to complete her latest masterpiece of smart, sensual understatement Thorn In My Heart (Lojinx/Yep Roc).

The array of top-tier guests on the album include Jason Isbell, Wilco’s Pat Sansone, My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel, Will Kimbrough and Yearwood, who was, for the first time, returning the harmony-singing favor. And the dozen songs themselves show that Richey’s still dreaming up fetching melodies that arc and bend in unexpected ways, and still discovering fresh angles from which to articulate matters of the heart.

Upcoming House Concerts:

David Olney with Wink Burcham opening June 2nd
Jon Dee Graham and The Fighting Cocks-confirmed for June 27th.
