Note from the Host:
Thanks to all who came out to support live music at our last show, and brought food to share.  You guys are the best.  I am really pumped to share with you this next artist, John Dee Graham and The Fighting Cocks.  The band will feature Geo Duron (John Wesley Harding, Alejandro, etc.) and Andrew Duplantis (Son Volt, Meat Puppets, etc.).

"Jon Dee Graham is a guitarist and songwriter from Austin, Texas. A former member of the True Believers with Alejandro Escovedo, Graham is the only musician ever to be inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame three times.

Jon Dee Graham is most well known for his solo work, including the critically acclaimed records "Escape from Monster Island", "Hooray For The Moon", and "Full". He is also well known for his tenure in The Skunks, Austin's very first punk band, and roots-rock pioneers The True Believers with Alejandro Escovedo. Jon Dee has also played guitar with acts such as John Doe (X, The Knitters), Exene Cervenka (X), Michelle Shocked, Alejandro Escovedo, Kelly Willis, and The Gourds and has had his songs covered by many artists, including Patty Smythe, Patty Griffin and James McMurtry."

Laredo - Jon Dee Graham and the Fighting Cocks

I first laid eyes on Jon Dee Graham on April 16, 1984. He was 25. I was 23.

We were at the Ritz, a giant rock club in Manhattan’s East Village. Jon Dee was playing in a band from Austin, Tex., called the True Believers, who were opening for Los Lobos. I am impatient with opening acts, and I was prepared as always to dislike whatever this thing called the True Believers would turn out to be.

Then they came out on stage and blew my hair back. The Troobs, as their fans called them, were a roaring, three-guitar army like nothing I’d heard since Skynyrd’s plane went down. But these guys had done time in punk-rock bands. They united the Athens weirdness I had loved in college with the three-guitar stomp that stayed in my eight-track player all through high school.

What I remember liking about Jon Dee Graham was that even though he could clearly play like hell, he never showed off. His solos always served the song.  Story by Chuck Reece  If you want to read the whole story, go to:  The Bitter Southerner
